Separation in the Source:

Separation in the source is the recovery of the recyclable materials in their point of origin, such as the home, trade, industries and schools. These recovered materials are taken to centers of collection or recycling depending on their categories.

One of the advantages of the separation in the source is that the recyclable recovered materials are not contaminated because they have not been mixed with the rest of the solid residues. This method helps to reduce the volume of the solid residues that comes to the systems of sanitary landfill and therefore it lengthens the useful life of them. Also, it reduces the municipal costs of compilation and final disposition of the solid waste. The success of this method will depend, to a great extent, on the development of educational programs to arouse the importance of cooperating implanting the strategy of recycling in our daily life.

Manual separation:

The manual separation of the solid residues happens after the withdrawal. This method is not recommended because it has presented health and safety problems because the recovery materials have been mixed with other contaminated waste.

Mechanical separation:

Mechanical separation is the recovery of materials with mechanical or electromechanical means after the withdrawal. Some of these systems of mechanical separation segregate all materials. This method allows to recover bigger amounts of solid wate compared to other methods previously applied.
